Fly of the Month

Spent Spruce Moth

Photograph, recipe and tying instructions can be found at Fly Fisherman Magazine or in the May issue of the Tippet

Fly Tying Night (May 20th, 2010)

We'll be meeting again next month, May 20th, 7-9pm at the Moscow Fly Shop. Amber Lake will be a distant memory so perhaps we should turn our attention to stream flies that might be useful for the St Joe fishout. Having said that, here's one that I think everyone ought to have in their flybox. It's called the Spent Spruce Moth and I know it works on the Joe. Especially during the hot days of July. We'll focus on it for the May Fly Tying night.

Fly Tying Night (April 22nd, 2010)

Sorry we missed so many of you last week at the fly shop. Mark Brownell, Steve Bush, Dale Coryell and myself tied Super Flies - or rather my interpretation of it. Steve field tested the fly last weekend out at the Elk River Reservoir and noted: "After trying a couple of flies I have fished at the pond in the past and done well with, I switched to the Super Fly. I think it is mis-named. It ought to be supper fly. The fish really came to life once I put that fly on." So, there you have it - tried and true, you missed a good tie!

Here's a neat article about the venerable Adams that you might find interesting. The Adams: History Revisted.

A few other flies to consider for fishing Amber Lake:
Olive Willy
Waterboatman
Serendipity

The Bead Worm (March)

For more information on this fly see this month's Tippet or Phil Rowley's tying instructions. Don't forget to join the site (it's free) and see the instructional video!

Fly Tying Night (March 18th, 2010)

Gerry Videgar demonstrated his tying techniques using various materials for chironomid patterns. I picked up several good tips, not only for tying chironomids but also for using glass beads in general. If you missed last night, you missed some good fishing AND tying information. I also want to thank Dale for opening his shop in the evening for the Clearwater Fly Casters fly tying group!

Fly Tying Night (February 18th, 2010)

We had a great time tying beadhead flies at Dale's shop. New to the group was Bob Buvel. Bob had a great looking skwala pattern he was planning on fishing over in Montana this spring.

Fly Tying Night (1/21/2010)

Thanks to everyone for coming out to fly tying last night! We had quite a crowd and I hope everyone learned something. I really liked seeing the different materials used for posts - Cliff's egg yarn looked great and was easy to work with and Marc's fluorescent scarlet antron just absolutely glowed - both materials ought to be visible for miles on the stream and would make great substitutions for the traditional white posts.

Thanks to Jerry for showing us Charlie Craven's method for tying parachutes. For those who haven't visited Charlie's Flybox there's a link below. I've also included links for tying instructions for 'The Pickle' that Jerry mentioned and a couple of interviews with Charlie from Ask About Flyfishing. Witt brought in a printout of a fly using Wally Wings and I've put a link showing how they are made and tied in on a fly. I haven't tried the technique but they look neat and probably worth a session at the bench to learn how.

Beadheads Nymphs. Our next session will be February 18th and I was thinking of some sort of beadhead nymph as the pattern. The Shop Vac  has been suggested (Leroy Hyatt featured it in this week's Tribune) and there's always the ever popular PT, Prince Nymph or Zug Bug.
